“The educational role of the museum is considered by regional museum entities to be an integral part of life. The most modern concept of all cultural heritage is integral and offers the fundamental service of stimulating the knowledge of art, the discovery of the identity of the territory and the knowledge that cultural heritage should be enjoyed, safeguarded and valued. Starting with these ideas, the City Museum offers scientifically structured educational courses every year for each grade called “Servizio Museo e Scuola”. With an approach directed at artwork on one side and a specific jargon on the other (peculiar because it makes a reference to emotions and to the force of influence), the Museum wants to involve the student in a single and complex course, founded on values of the knowledge of cultural heritage and the development of individual creativity. The elaborated exhibit, together with materials from the workshop activities and support from creative workshops from Art Attack Magazine, qualifies the conclusive moment of this stimulating course of growth and knowledge.”

THE COURSES
The FIRST course, “La Gazzetta del Museo”, proposes to young visitors to write the “Gazzetta” del Museo with the help of the director of the newspaper, the Gazzetta di Mantova. Students will personally and unusually analyze the works that are displayed and will try to transmit to future visitors the impressions and emotions that they saw in a creative way.
The SECOND course, Let’s Discover the UNESCO City, intends to guide students to the progressive discovery of lost places and human spaces that have been modified over the course of centuries. Following traces of some artworks from their original location to the Museum, students will be stimulated to specify these lost or mutated places and spaces. The research of the (sometimes radical) evolution, of different architectural and urban Mantova realities, will present occasions for a wider knowledge of the city and for a real understanding of the value of artwork.
The THIRD course, The Artist’s Craft, finalizes the understanding of the multiform artistic panorama and the techniques of great Maestri from the Renaissance. Ideally entering into an important workshop, it will be fun to discover the personal work methods, the secrets and the tricks of a great artist, observing the most intimate secrets and imitating them in the practical realization of a work or sculpture in papier mâché
IThe FOURTH course, The Princes’ Party: court games that offer the opportunity to develop the understanding of Mantova’s cultural environment between the XV and XVI centuries, focusing attention on the importance of roles that games and fun had in the lifestyles of aristocratic families. In particular, the court of Isabella d’Este and Francesco II Gonzaga will be investigated, along with game and amusement organizers. Students will have the opportunity to discover and experiment with various pastimes and historical games by recreating the games from one of the most important courts of the Renaissance in the magical atmosphere of the Prince’s Palace.
SINGLE ENCOUNTER
The “MUSEO E SCUOLA” service, particularly for schools outside of the province, recommends teachers to propose a single encounter of the THIRD course. By means of an initial lesson and related workshop activities, canvas painting will be investigated and the environment of a Renaissance painter’s workshop relived.
"The battle of Solferino and San Martino in the Mantova Renaissance"
Educational project for middle schools in Mantova historical museums, provided by the Sistema Provinciale dei Musei e dei Beni Culturali Mantovani. This educational project intends to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the battle of the 24 June 1859 when the Franco-Piemontese military fought against the Austrians in Solferino and San Martino. It was a decisive moment in the unification process of Italy that inspired Henry Dunant to create the Red Cross for those wounded in war. The educational course is articulated in different complimentary phases and foresees 4 encounters for each class enrolled in the project. Students from middle schools will be invited to retrace the events of the 2nd War of Independence thanks to themed visits, workshops and encounters that utilize all possible historical tools: museum objects, map reproductions, archive documents, music, newspapers and military heritage. The final result will be a documentary video that collects all of the involved classes. For classes, it is possible to adhere to the entire educational course (4 encounters) or to the single proposals of each museum.
Together with the educational project, "The battle of Solferino and San Martino during Mantova’s resurgence", and in relation to the exhibit from the 14 November 2009 to the 25 April 2010, the City Museum proposes a single course educational workshop entitled "Reportage dal campo di battaglia: come nascevano le incisioni di fatti di guerra" (Reporting from the battlefield: how artwork from war is born) dedicated to educating students on the artistic technique of engraving and the value of printing which was the fundamental instrument of illustration for historical fact during the 1800s.
The educational courses and the workshop activities will be supported by specific multimedia software so as to give students the space to freely, creatively and elaborately interact. By using new technologies, it will be possible to discover, compare and see a wide range of content in order to fully complete the visit/course. A multimedia kit will be available to prepare students for the chosen educational course. The kit will contain materials that can also be used in the classroom once the Museum course is finished. The finished work will be collected and displayed at the San Sebastiano Palace City Museum for an exhibit representing all school activities.
